4th Urban and Regional Research Network Symposium
Modes of Spatial Intervention and its Reflections after Neo-Liberalism
28 – 30 November 2013
Mersin University
The central government’s interfering attitude on urban space in 2000s, and the tools developed for this purpose, especially with urban transformation projects contradicts with the decentralisation processes experienced in 1980s resulted in the increasing importance of localities and local governments that goes beyond the neo-liberalism in social and economical terms. In such a process, where the central government imposes the rules with the legislations having direct impact on urban space, the city became an instrument to both reshape the existing power structures and produce new social structures.
At this regard, it is critical to analyse and define this period in detail that can be described as a new phase of the post of neo-liberalism together with the determination of emerging socio-spatial, economic and environmental costs. However, the most significant part is to discuss how should be the modes of spatial interventions, the possible policies and approaches since with respect to these developments, it is required to embody different approaches and diverse intervention modes on space.
In order to elaborate this issue, the symposium is composed of diverse session topics as follows.
1. State’s diverse intervention methods and tools on space: Urban Transformation, Privatization, etc…
2. Large-scale regional and urban projects, large-scale events
3. Socio-economical results of new intervention modes
4. Changes in policies for the conservation of cultural heritage
5. Environmental policies and major energy investments: HES, nuclear power plants, etc…
6. Re-structuring of local governments (spatial, administrative and legal aspects)
7. Changes in sectoral policies: Housing, Industry, Transportation, Technology, etc…
8. Reactions to neoliberal urban policies: New Urban Movements; Alternative approaches, policies and practices.
